Installation FAQs

Is the UV device EPA registered?

The UV devices are not EPA registered which is why a 1-3 ppm free available chlorine residual is required in conjunction with the system. The facility where the units are manufactured is an EPA establishment, meaning that the location is compliant with EPA guidelines.

Are the UV devices UL registered?

The LC10 is UL registered and the LC20 is ETL registered. ETL shows that the product has been independently tested by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL).

What is the maximum size of a pool (gallonage) that the UV device can be installed on?

UV sizing is based on flow rate, so it can be installed on any pool that meets the required flow rate demands to maximize the UV dosage while still providing enough turnover for adequate filtration.

Why is flow rate important?

Flow through the BioLab® UV determines the UV dosage. Since dosage is a function of exposure time, a flow rate through the vessel that is too high will not provide enough exposure time to allow for effective inactivation. A flow rate that is too low will not provide the proper turnover rate to allow for efficient filtration.

How do I determine flow rate? What is the maximum flow?

The flow rate through your UV device is dictated by the length and size of piping for your pool and the size and output of your circulation pump. Refer to your pool builder for your circulation flow rate and refer back to your manual for the recommended flow rate to maximize the UV dosage for your unit.

How much flow is needed for the light to illuminate?

BioLab UV devices come equipped with a pressure switch that will illuminate the bulb when the dynamic pressure within the vessel reaches 0.5 psi.

How do I know what is the inlet and outlet on the unit? Does it matter which is which?

Yes, it matters. The inlet is at the bottom of the unit, and the outlet at the top. This allows any air that gets trapped in the piping to pass through the device and be vented at your pool.

Can the device be installed below the pool waterline?

Yes, but if the unit is located with any portion of the device below the pool waterline, then ISOLATION VALVES ARE MANDATORY so you may winterize or remove the device without draining your pool. Additionally, for installations one (1) foot or more below the waterline, a replacement 5 psi pressure switch must be installed to differentiate between dynamic pressure and backpressure for proper bulb illumination. Installations eleven (11) feet below the waterline are prohibited.

Can the UV device be installed horizontally?

No, vertical mounting is required to maintain the weatherproof integrity of the electrical enclosure hood.

How much pipe is needed to perform a retrofit installation?

This really is dependent upon configuration. For ease of installation, we recommend working with at least 5 feet of straight pipe directly after the filter, but a skilled installer may be able to work with less.

I have a 1-1/2" pipe, but the unit comes with a 2" union what do I do?

Adapters to reduce down to 1-1/2" piping are available at any plumbing supply or hardware store.

How is the device powered?

The UV device is powered using a 15A/120V outlet with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).

What should I do if the power cord is not long enough?

You can use an extension cord if it is at least a 14/3 gauge conductor, waterproof type and is no more than twenty five (25) feet (7.5 meters) long.
